      Exploring Music

      Fit for A King

For centuries, the relationship between a King and his musical subjects has been intimate and deep. From Bach to Bridge, we will listen to this rich and intriguing world of the European court composer. This means listening to some glorious music and, in most cases, giving credit where credit is due to the people who commissioned these works. Bill McGlaughlin will connect Haydn, Scarlatti, and Walton to their savvy patrons, confirming that if you want to command the finest musicians, it helps to be the king.

      Best of Studs Terkel

      This Train, Part 1 (c. 1963)

Part one of “This Train,” WFMT’s annual remembrance of the 1963 civil rights March on Washington. Studs joined hundreds of Chicagoans on a train bound for Washington, D.C. He recorded their thoughts and experiences on his portable tape recorder, and wove those historic voices into this award-winning documentary.
