Les Cinq Plus

This week’s theme: French composers from the generation before Les Six, that we are fondly calling Les Cinq Plus. Like Les Six, our composers did not have a great deal in common, and the way they have been grouped is a historical accident. Unlike Les Six, Les Cinq Plus grew up listening to the art songs of the 1800s, and each in their way carried this romantic torch forward: Chabrier, Massenet, Duparc, Chausson, Dukas, and perhaps Satie as “L’Autre.”

Born October 10, 1946 in Maywood, Illinois, WFMT remembers him on the eve of what would have been his 80th birthday. The second half of this program includes a portion of a 1976 interview with one of John Prine's good friends: the songwriter, performer, and incandescent guitarist, Steve Goodman (1948–1984).
